Yankees are the most fun team in baseball right now | New York Post
Thanks for contacting us. We ve received your submission. Back to Reading Aaron Judge congratulates Brett Gardner after Gardner's solo homer in the Yankees' 7-0 win. TORONTO — Remember that March poll about the Mets taking over New York City? Not a great year for polls Austin Wolfe Jersey. The Yankees not only have taken over the city, they've taken over baseball."To me,'' a veteran scout told The Post on Saturday, "the Yankees are the most fun team in the game right now. They're a blast to watch''Are they ever. How about the eighth inning Saturday, when the Yankees bashed four solo home runs against Toronto reliever Jason Grilli on their way to a 7-0 victory over the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre? The Yankees produced eight hits in the game, all for extra bases, to back rookie left-hander Jordan Montgomery.Brett Gardner led off the eighth with his 12th home run. Then with two outs, Matt Holliday, Starlin Castro and Didi Gregorius crushed back-to-back-to-back solo shots. Fifty-three games into the season, the Yankees are 11 games over .500 while the Mets are wallowing along. That Quinnipiac University survey released in late March proclaimed 45 percent of NYC baseball fans prefer the Mets, compared to 43 percent who favor the Bronx Bombers.Might want to redo that poll now.Seemingly overnight, the AL East-leading Yankees have a fun future and one terrific present. If it isn't Gardner and Holliday having a bald bash home-run dash — each have 12 home runs — it is Aaron Judge lining a scorching run-scoring 116.2-mph double in the third inning that nearly tore off the glove of leaping center fielder Kevin Pillar.Or it is Judge warming up before the bottom of the eighth, playing catch with a fan in a front row seat along the right-field line. How does a team change overnight? Holliday, a veteran of 14 major league seasons, explained the secret to the Yankees' success."This team has come together real nice,'' Holliday told The Post. "It's a nice blend of veterans and young guys, and our young guys all play the game really hard and it means a lot to them. I've been really impressed how much it means to them. They all want to be great. We talk baseball a lot, we hang out away from the field a lot, it's just been a lot of fun. It's come together really well.''It sure has, good enough for first place in the difficult AL East."It's been a lot of fun coming to the park, and you can't say that every year,'' Holliday said. "If you are not having fun, this game can get hard and it can have an effect on your play. We really know each other, and it's just a different feeling here. It adds to the experience, we just have a deeper appreciation for each other.''Gardner and Holliday, of course, have their little fun. After Gardner homered, Holliday had to keep up, and when he got back to the dugout after his monster shot, he gave Gardner a little ribbing."I gave him his minute of being in the lead. I let him have his moment," Holliday said of their head-to-head homer battle, now tied at 12. "I was just messing with him.''Added Gardner: "It's a good thing the distance didn't matter because he would have me in that department.''When the Yankees take the field, Judge usually walks past second base chatting with Gardner as they take their respective positions. After the eighth-inning barrage, Judge jokingly told Gardner, "Your home run barely got out, man, don't get too excited about that.""We're having fun and we're playing the game the right way,'' Judge said. "I'm just having a blast.''Which brings us to the warmup tosses with the fan."Our batboy was getting a jacket from the bullpen,'' Judge said. "So I had no one to play catch with and the fan had a glove so I said ‘Hey, you got a glove, I got a glove, I got to get warmed up.' ''With that, a fan's day was made and the Yankees were well on their way to another home-run, fun-filled, winning day at the ballpark. They say this game is supposed to be fun. These Yankees really are having a blast.Share this:FacebookTwitterGoogleFacebook MessengerWhatsAppEmailCopy News Corp. is a network of leading companies in the world of diversified media, news, and information services.
