Galway defended their Leinster title on Sunday after an epic final replay with Kilkenny. The Tribesmen are now into the All-Ireland semi-final, and are just two steps away from ensuring that the Liam MacCarthy Cup will winter west of the Shannon once again.

Having finished on the losing side of a classic, Kilkenny now face Limerick in an All-Ireland quarter-final, in what will be their third consecutive weekend in action.

Man of the match in Thurles, Cathal Mannion explained after the game that they were conscious of the importance to avoid the fate which now faces Kilkenny.

"I suppose it was in the back of the mind," Mannion said. "But when you get to provincial final, you want to win it. Simple as that.

"It (the three-week break) probably is [ideal] with regards to the two games in a row there. But, you know we've loads to work on and we're going to concentrate on the things we needed to work on from today and last week. It's going to be a tough three weeks ahead to us."

Galway scraped through a real battle against their great rivals, but the game looked well poised when the Cats closed the gap from 12 points to one.

"It's about the next ball, you don't be thinking about the score," Mannion added. "You don't really pay an awful about of attention to it. You just keep hurling, keep hurling. Gradually we got the lead back again and finished fairly well.

"Every game you go into, you're going to learn a lot from it. We learned a lot last week, and we learned a lot today as well. There's going to be a bigger day ahead, a bigger match ahead. Regardless of who we have, it's going to be a step up.

"Every day we go out, we're trying to play the best we can. We take every game as it comes. We don't go out thinking we're ahead of anyone else. But I suppose that's not for us players to be talking about."

There is huge competition in the squad for places, particularly in the forwards as 2017 All-Star Conor Cooney was dropped in favour of Johnny Glynn before throw-in. Mannion made it clear such competition is a massive positive for Galway.

"It's what you need in the team and the panel," Mannion said. "You need lads driving you. You don't mind who starts, obviously you'd like to start yourself. But you know the lad that's in for you, or the lad coming on for you is going to do the job as well. That's what you need in a team.

"Johnny is a massive player for us, and I'm delighted for him that he got his chance. He really delivered.

"It was one of those days when everything I hit went over. But it was a team performance and the lads that came in really drove it on as well. We're delighted."

Mannion and Galway now lie in wait to see who they will face in the All-Ireland semi-final.
